My Bridge Builders experience: It didn’t tell us what to think, it taught us how to think

Myah, BBP 2025 participant

This summer, I joined the Bridge Builders programme organised by Solutions Not Sides, and honestly, it changed the way I see dialogue, conflict, and connection. I went in thinking it would be just another academic experience, some lectures, maybe a few debates but it turned out to be something much deeper. It was about listening, understanding, and finding solutions rather than choosing sides.

Solutions Not Sides focuses on interfaith dialogue, particularly exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a way that encourages empathy and understanding instead of division. The programme brings together young people from different backgrounds to learn how to discuss global issues respectfully and think critically about narratives we often see in the media.

What stood out most to me was how it didn’t tell us what to think, it taught us how to think, and how to really listen. We learned how conflict is never black and white, and that meaningful change only happens when people are willing to step out of their comfort zones and see humanity before politics.

Through hearing different perspectives, I learned that interfaith dialogue isn’t just about religion, it’s about bridging worlds. It’s about realising that people’s experiences shape their views, and if we want to make a difference, we have to approach every conversation with curiosity and hope instead of judgement.

The people I met were just as inspiring as the lessons themselves. Everyone came with different stories, beliefs, and motivations. Yet somehow, by the end of it, we all felt connected by our shared hope for peace. There were emotional moments, debates, laughter, and even times we didn’t agree, but those were the times we grew the most.

I want to carry these lessons into my future career and help create spaces where dialogue replaces division. The world doesn’t need more people shouting their opinions, it needs more people building bridges.

If you ever get the chance to take part in a programme like this, do it. You won’t just learn about global issues, you'll learn about yourself, and how powerful it can be to choose solutions, not sides. Solutions Not Sides provided opportunities I never believed I could be involved in, giving me a newfound confidence that will last forever.
